San Miguel Corporation (SMC)

“Project STEP-UP aims to transform procurement at San Miguel through increased spend visibility and information, and the creation of a uniform buying process, and by enabling us to locate and work with the best suppliers available in order to deliver quality goods at competitive prices to our customers,”
-- Gerardo Payumo, VP and Director of Purchasing

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is Southeast Asia’s largest food, beverage and packaging company and has over 100 facilities across the Philippines, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries.

With the aim to increase the company’s savings, SMC engaged into a software licensing and services contract with Transprocure Corp. last August 2003. This smart move paved way for the centralization of the company’s annual spending.

TransProcure designed Project STEP-UP (SMC Technology Enabled Procurement – Unlimited Potential), a multi-million project which involves the integration of Ariba, an eProcurement software, in the 11 business units of SMC.

According to SMC Vice-President and Purchasing Director Gerardo Payumo, the project is set to bring changes to the procurement system of the company through increased spending visibility and information.

“The automated buying process will enable us to locate and work with the best suppliers available in order to deliver quality goods at competitive prices to our customers,” Mr. Payumo said.

San Miguel Corporation now adopts a number of cost-saving measures to keep the costs lower than the usual. It makes use of hedging for agricultural products such as whet and malt, spot buying for capital equipment, and long-term contracts for services.

SMC’s savings gained through procurement strategies were utilized for increasing sales through marketing initiatives or schemes.
